Craniofacial Ophthalmology referral pathway

Newly diagnosed children resident in Scotland are all referred to Glasgow’s craniofacial team, one of five UK treatment centres.

All children have baseline ophthalmic assessment and follow-ups (aligned to timeline as indicated in the pathway) in their Health Board of residence. Glasgow’s craniofacial team will refer each newly diagnosed child to local ophthalmology services for baseline assessment and request post –op reviews for Low-risk pathway, if required.

Following each assessment, clinical letters indicating presence or absence of signs of raised ICP should be copied to the Glasgow craniofacial team with summary of acuity, refractive status, squint and disc appearance ggc.craniofacialscotland@ggc.scot.nhs.uk

VEP assessment is managed separately in either Glasgow (ruth.hamilton2@ggc.scot.nhs.uk) or Aberdeen (vikki.mcbain@nhs.scot) and a referral should be made for
each child by the local ophthalmology service to the relevant VEP team – follow-up VEPs will be appointed automatically without need for further referral.
